This audiovisual essay, titled “The Iron Rose” (La rosa de hierro), explores the intersection of art therapy, ecofeminism, and community mental health through the embodied experience of Berta Canals. Following her gender transition, the protagonist returns to her rural roots, where she confronts social prejudice and objectification. In response, she engages in two physical acts of resistance and healing: cultivating the earth and forging metal. Through embodied labor, she transforms an abandoned, bramble-filled plot into a sustainable garden, while simultaneously reclaiming her great-grandfather’s blacksmithing legacy to channel her societal “helplessness” into therapeutic art. The conceptual climax of the research centers on her creation of an “iron rose,” a sculpture that subverts the patriarchal tradition of Sant Jordi—which historically associates women with the “weaker sex”—to instead symbolize “the soul of the strong woman”. Ultimately, this documentary demonstrates how the physical and embodied act of transforming materials allows the artist to transform herself, “forging her destiny” and achieving the necessary well-being to live.

</disp-quote>

There are places that hold the memory of who we were, but sometimes resist accepting the truth of who we have chosen to be. The return to our roots is never a path free of thorns when the gaze of the other is loaded with prejudice. However, just as a seed needs the stillness of the earth to sprout, it is by stepping away from the noise that an invaluable opportunity arises: the chance to put down roots within ourselves and choose authenticity.

[Berta Canals:]

<disp-quote>

</disp-quote>

Bearing in mind that I was already here as a child… I was a little girl, but to others I was a little boy. So, when I came back here, the people, well of course, the mindset they had, right? The way they looked at me wasn’t how I saw myself, but how they, you know? How they saw me. And so, socially, well, I’ve had a bit of a hard time, a bit of a hard time with the fact that, well, hate insults directed at me, and well, that sometimes isolates you, but it also gives you the opportunity to truly be who you are, to be with yourself, and over time you meet people who are really worth it, and that’s cool, it makes you happy.

[Voiceover:]

<disp-quote>

</disp-quote>

Art is not just the search for beauty; above all, it is a tool of resistance.

[Berta Canals:]

<disp-quote>

</disp-quote>

Looking at the family tree, I discovered that my great-grandfather was a blacksmith. It was something very fascinating, it was like something you could transform as many times as you wanted, right? It held an inspiration inside, and it all also came from my own transformation. I made a transition, and I guess, well, everything I do is a bit to release my… It wouldn’t be hate, but rather helplessness. Helplessness seeing that things remain as they are, that we women are treated—at least from the perspective of trans women—purely as sexual objects, right? And so, the act of being able to strike the iron, right? Well, it gives me a kind of peace, and it’s like a… A therapy.

[Voiceover:]

<disp-quote>

</disp-quote>

Defying the impossible becomes a philosophy of life. Disconnecting from the incessant noise to connect with the Earth, seeking a purer, more sustainable, and freer balance.

[Berta Canals:]

<disp-quote>

Yo digo, “Imposible, te vas a ver, vas a ver”.

</disp-quote>

It all started in the plot of land right across from my house, where, well, I started a small garden and they told me it was impossible for anything to grow there. I said, “Impossible? You’ll see, you’ll see.” And so I started looking for horse manure, soil from gardens of people I knew and such, and I made a mix and well, lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, everything. And then that gave me the strength to say, “Yes, well, if I’ve done this, I can go to the other side of the river where there is an abandoned space full of brambles, right? And start clearing everything to make a large vegetable garden there and be able to have food all year round and not depend so much on supermarkets, and have a more sustainable mentality. I put them here interspersed, and you can see that garlic and strawberry plants are compatible and help each other. It’s like the… and lettuce.

[Voiceover:]

<disp-quote>

</disp-quote>

Resilience is a seed that spreads. Whoever has had to fight for their own blooming knows how to make life sprout where others only see barren land and brambles.

[Berta Canals:]

<disp-quote>

Agobiada, tanta información, ¿no?.

</disp-quote>

And from here on, I keep creating, but with a different vision because in the city I was like, you know? Overwhelmed by so much information, right? My mothers always had the television on at all hours of the day, and here I can decide not to watch television for a month if I want to. So, that gives me a lot of possibilities to work on the house, which then reflect in the pieces I make. My art seeks, I believe, a change—a change in mentality, in sustainability, right? Of a different world. And my pieces… Well, I suppose for me the main one of all is the rose. For me, it has an incredibly powerful symbolism in a feminist sense, because women have always… well, before in the dictionary, at least here in Spain, right? Woman was listed as the ‘weaker sex’. And the rose has always been heavily associated with women on Sant Jordi. Men give women a rose, and women give men a book, as if men lacked culture, right? And we, well, are just happy with a flower. And well, I wanted to give it a twist, right? To flip it as an iron rose, and for me, the symbolism is the soul of the strong woman. And I believe that through art, through the act of transforming metals, I transformed myself, forging my destiny. That’s it. I think that working with iron gives me the peace, the happiness I need to live.

[Voiceover:]

<disp-quote>

</disp-quote>

In the end, the masterpiece of any artist is not the piece that rests on the pedestal. The true transformative power of art lies in its ability to mold the one who wields it.
